bantry bay cape townBantry Bay is a suburb of Cape Town situated on the slopes of Lion's Head and overlooking a rocky coastline between Sea Point and Clifton. It was originally called Botany Bay after a botanical garden that was planted here for the cultivation of medicinal herbs. It has a unique little beach called Saunders' Rocks which has a lovely tidal pool for safe bathing.

Bantry Bay is a stone's throw from the Cape Town city centre, the V&A Waterfront, the convention centre and the Table Mountain cableway. Bantry Bay lies on the Atlantic Seaboard, which means wonderful sun sets, long summer evenings and easy access to Clifton's beaches - some of the best in Cape Town, if not the world, and well sheltered when the wind blows. Its centrality makes Bantry Bay an ideal place to stay when in Cape Town.

Bantry Bay is known to be the most wind free area in Cape Town. Secluded & protected, the inhabitants of this exclusive area enjoy about 290 wind free days per year - a significant fact given Cape Town's windy climate. It is overlooked by Lion's Head, which is the eroded core of an ancient volcano. There is a plaque on the seashore that commemorates the observation by Charles Darwin, that during his visit to the Cape, this was noted as the site of a unique geological feature, being the intrusion of Basaltic volcanic rock into granitic rock.

Bantry Bay is one of the most sought after estate areas in the city due to its trendy upmarket appeal. From Bantry Bay you can easily walk to local restaurants, bars and coffee shops in Sea Point and Clifton and the trendy Carlucci's deli, in Bantry Bay, is wonderful for early morning coffee and croissants. Bantry Bay is within easy reach of Table Mountain and the cableway, the V&A Waterfront and the city bowl are only 5 minutes away and the suburb has its own deli.

History of Bantry Bay, Cape Town
Bantry Bay was originally the site of a terraced botanical garden, established in the early 1800s, while the first home appeared there in the 1920s. Little of this rural atmosphere is left today, as Bantry Bay is now a residential area, with clusters of hotels, flats and holiday homes. The suburb and the town were named after the Bantry Bay in Ireland.
