brackenfield cape townBrackenfell is a northern suburb of Cape Town situated within the Western Cape province of South Africa at the gateway to the winelands. The local government services are provided by the City of Cape Town Municipality. In Brackenfell you will find a variety of property including affordable and comfortable accommodation and upmarket luxury property situated on the dramatic foothills of Cape Town.

Brackenfell is a fast growing community. The property growth in Brackenfell has seen many young couples from a variety of cultural groups in South Africa drawn to this Cape Town suburb. Brackenfell has a very good town planning infrastructure with good schools, churches and other community related institutions.

Brackenfell offers an excellent infrastructure to property owners including excellent schools, major shopping malls and first class medical services. Sports lovers are well catered for in Brackenfell with many different sporting facilities. The major advantage Brackenfell has is its geographical location; it is closely situated to the CBD and most of the popular Cape Town beaches, meaning that visitors and residents are away from the traffic and congestion of the inner city, but they also have easy and direct access to many of the top attractions found in these parts.

The 36-hectare Bracken Nature Reserve lies in the heart of the Brackenfell residential area. The vegetation type is Swartland Granite Renosterveld and Cape Flats Sand Fynbos, with a rich and unique diversity of succulents, geophytes, orchids, mosses and lichens. The granite-based soil on site differs from the clay of the surrounding area. More than 160 different indigenous plants have been listed, four of which are found only in Cape Town and four threatened with extinction. A few small mammals and reptiles live on the site, as well as birds like the Black Shouldered Kite, Sacred Ibis and the Peregrine Falcon.

Bracken Nature Reserve is also home to the rare protected shrub, Mountain Dahlia, which had never been seen on the Cape Flats until City of Cape Town staff discovered it there in 2006. Also known as the Orange Nodding Head (Liparia splendens), the plant is protected under the Western Cape Nature Conservation Laws (Amendment Act 2000). It grows to 2.5m tall with simple oval leaves. The flowers are orange, densely clustered into round flower heads that nod downwards at the end of branches. In the 18th century a canon used to be fired from the top of the Bracken Hill to alert local farmers that ships needing produce had arrived in Table Bay.
