Tokai - Cape Town SuburbCape Town Conferences > Cape Town > Tokai Conference Venues in Tokai, Cape Town
Homes in Tokai are large and set in beautifully established gardens and tree-lined avenues. There’s a wonderfully comfortable feeling here, which could have something to do with the fact that Tokai’s other boundaries are the Constantiaberg and the vineyards of Uitsig, which forms part of the Constantia Wine Route. Tokai originated, as did much of this part of Cape Town, as a farm, and the initial homestead still stands in the suburb - a fine example of Cape Dutch architecture. The Tokai forest, originally planted by Simon van der Stel in 1694, was filled with oaks. Today it is a pine plantation, which extends up the slopes of the Constantiaberg Mountain range and provides wonderful routes for mountain bikers and is a haunt for locals and their dogs Nearby, is the Pollsmoor Prison, where Nelson Mandela and other political prisoners were incarcerated by the Apartheid regime. It should be noted that Mandela was there for four years (1984 to 1988) after his transfer from Robben Island, before moving on to Victor Verster Prison until his release on 11 February 1990. Some of Tokai's roads are paved with red brick. Streams run through Tokai and the pine plantations, forming green belts where various bird, frog, and insect species make their home. These green belts also provide areas for recreation including walking, cycling and dog walking. History of Tokai Cape Town Suburbs Map of Tokai
