The challenging golf courses, numerous sports venues and the racecourse are all in peaceful rural surroundings. Beautiful open areas, like the Durbanville and Tygerberg Nature Reserves and the nationally renowned Rose Garden, all add their special flavour to Tygerber's unique tranquil character. After an absence of 100 years from the area, bontebok once again roam freely throughout the 300ha Tygerberg Nature Reserve, thanks to the efforts of the nature conservation branch of the City of Cape Town. The name “Tygerberg” is reputedly a legacy from travellers of yore, who mistakenly identified endemic leopards as “tijghers”. Others say the mottled appearance of the hilltops in the reserve are reminiscent of leopards’ patterned coats. Proclaimed in 1973, this reserve represents one of the last enclaves of threatened West Coast renosterveld. Activities that attract visitors to the Tygerberg Nature Reserve include various well-signposted hiking trails, local fauna and bird watching. Almost 500 flora species have been recorded, 12 of which are threatened with extinction. Eight plant types are endemic to Cape Town and three species are endemic to Tygerberg itself. Fauna species are numerous, with 50 mammals, 125 bird species, 35 reptiles, 8 types of frog and 33 different types of butterfly identified within the reserve. The reserve’s Kristo Pienaar Environmental Education Centre features a resource centre, library and herbarium where geography, town planning and ecology lessons are offered. Booking is essential. Tygerberg is rich in cultural and historical diversity. Art and craft centres Philani and Zenzele, in the growing town of Khayalitsha reflect the political turbulence and tokens of the apartheid past. While National Monuments like Onze Molen, one of the few original windmills in the Cape, and the old churches in Durbanville and Parow bear witness to the origin of some of the early settlers in the Tygerberg.
